Founded in 1986 by Drs. Ramón Berger (Detroit) and Eduard Kieffer (Paris), it is currently published by Elsevier on a bimonthly basis. It is the official publication of CVHH, the French-Language Vascular Surgery Society, the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery, the Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Society, the Southern California Vascular Surgical Society, Vascular Interventional Advances (VIVA), the Vascular Society of India, the Florida Vascular Soviet, and the Georgia Vascular Society . Its sections include: Clinical Research; Basic Research; Clinical Cases; Reviews; Developments in Endovascular and Endoscopic Surgery; Selected Techniques; Historical Notes; Editorials; and Letters to the Editor.

Between 1988 and 1990, the Annals of Vascular Surgery had Dr. Jose María Capdevila as co-editor, and a Spanish version (Anales de Cirugía Vascular) was published. This was discontinued in 1991 and replaced by the journal Archivos de Cirugía Vascular as the official publication of CVHH. After the creation of an entirely Hispanic peer review panel , composed of CVHH members, and the acceptance of manuscripts in Spanish, Anales de Cirugía Vascular was relaunched as a complete translation of the original version from Ann Vasc Surg. It was published continuously for 14 issues, from October 2007 to April 2009 (6 annual issues and 1 supplement). During this period, it received advertising support from 12 pharmaceutical and medical device companies. Like the French version, its publication was again interrupted due to the inability to cover production costs, leading to the development of the online version and the temporary cessation of the print edition of the full Spanish version since January 2010. Although its Impact Factor in the English-speaking world is moderate (maximum 2,02 (Q2) in 2007), Ann Vasc Surg remains the main forum for expression and publication of original works in the specialty from Spanish and Latin American centers, as well as a window of projection not only to the English-speaking world, but also to French-speaking countries, India and Brazil.
